Bak Dor 2 [2] at Moose Lodge [13]
5th place Moose Lodge (14-8) clinched a playoff spot with a 13-2 win over visiting Bak Dor 2. The Moose jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and had the match sewn up before the beer frame. Jorge Guerrero, Juan Manzo, and Bear Hernandez each had three wins for the Moose. Rosalie Breeland and Rikki Byers managed the only Bak Dor game wins. The Moose moved one step closer to 4th place, but to have any shot at moving up in the standings before playoffs begin, the Moose Lodge must win their next two matches; at 3rd place Sportsman 1 and at home against 4th place Break Time 1. Bak Dor 2 (6-16) fell one spot to 10th place.
Cliff Room 1 [6] at Monty's 1 [9]
Captain Ernesto Sanchez had three wins to lead his Monty's 1 squad to an important 9-6 victory over Cliff Room 1. These two playoff contenders came into the match with identical records, and the winner received 6th place in the standings. Monty's started the match en fuego, winning the first five games. Cliff Room won 3 of the next 4 with the one loss being a John Bushnell table run. Sanchez and Jesse Oliver left nothing to chance as they won the next two games to seal the match for Monty's. Pat Wieser led Cliff Room with two wins. 6th place Monty's 1 (10-12) now holds a one match lead over 7th place Cliff Room 1 (9-11), and Monty's also has six more game wins than Cliff Room. To have any chance at the playoffs, Cliff Room 1 will probably have to beat either Cliff Room 2 or Don Q's 1, both tough playoff teams.
Monty's 2 [9] at Don Q's 1 [6]
2nd place Monty's 2 (19-3) had their usual strong finish as they came from behind and beat 1st place Don Q's 1 by a score of 9-6. Freshly back from the U.S. Bar Table Championships in Reno, Robert Rosa opened his night with a break-and-run to steer Don Q's to a 5-3 lead. That's when Monty's lit the fire. Mundo Burques had two wins including a break-and-run in a six-game Monty's streak that put them over the top. If Monty's 2 can get past Monty's 3 and Break Time 1, they have a good chance at running the string, but they would still need Don Q's 1 (20-2) to lose one of their remaining matches in order to move up to 1st place. Should these two teams finish the season tied, Monty's 2 would hold the tie-breaker.
Old King's Road 2 [10] at Cliff Room 3 [5]
Bryan Lum had his first three-win night since week 3, leading Old King's Road 2 to a 10-5 victory at Cliff Room 3. Two-game winner Tony Lenzi got Cliff Room on the board first with a win in game one, but OKR responded with three straight wins and held that lead for the rest of the match. With the win, Old King's Road 2 (6-16) moved up two spots to 9th place. Cliff Room 3 (6-16) dropped back to 11th place.
Tiburon Tavern [8] at Creekside 1 [7]
TIBURON WON ONE!! Craig Keefer scored three wins for Tiburon Tavern in an 8-7 decision at Creekside 1; Tiburon's first victory since July 1st. Their losing streak ends at 28 matches. Tiburon won 4 of the first 5 games and never trailed in the match. This loss was devastating for Creekside, who must now win the rest of their games to have a chance at the playoffs. Creekside will face the Moose Lodge, Monty's 1, and Sportsman 1, so that task is a tall order. Kevin Rehak and Ben Woolf also played a major part in the Tiburon victory as each had two wins. Creekside was led by two-game winners Mark Weingartner, Ricardo Topete, and Brian Guajardo. Last place Tiburon's record is now 1-21. 8th place Creekside 1 fell to 9-13.
B Division
Break Time 2 [3] at Cliff Room 2 [12]
6th place Cliff Room 2 inched closer to the rest of the B Division playoff field with a 12-3 win at home against Break Time 2. Cliff Room's Brendan Mackey was the top point scorer, racking up three wins and a table run. Captain Jack Poet also had three wins for Cliff Room 2 (15-7). Avonell Ogden had a nice night for Break Time as she beat Nick Doerr and Brandon Teris. If Cliff Room 2 can get by their next two opponents, Don Q's 2 and Cliff Room 4, then they have a legitimate shot at finishing in the money. With the loss, Break Time 2 (6-16) fell to 9th place.
Carp Billiards [10] at Old Town Tavern [5]
Carp Billiards won the first 10 games of the night at Old Town Tavern, and evidently that was good enough for them as they lost the rest and walked away with a 10-5 victory. 8th place Carp Billiards improved to 7-15 while 11th place Old Town Tavern fell to 4-18.
Cliff Room 4 [9] at Old King's Road 1 [6]
1st place Cliff Room 4 (19-3) rebounded nicely from last week's loss to post a 9-6 win at Old King's Road 2. Just as they did in their first meeting, Cliff Room 4 jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but this time OKR was able to come back and tie the score at 6-6. Anchored by three-game winner Maurice Elias, Cliff Room was able to win the last three games of the night to pull away to victory. Elias's first win was his league-leading 12th table run. Sam Auchincloss and Pete Conover led OKR with two wins each. Cliff Room 4's lead over 2nd place Break Time 5 held steady as Break Time won by an identical score of 9-6. With the loss, Old King's Road 1 slipped a spot to 5th place, joining the gaggle of teams at 16-6. Old King's Road 1 will probably have to win their remaining games in order to finish in the money.
Creekside 2 [4] at Endless Summer [11]
Jack Sefarian and Skyler Stamegna powered a potent Endless Summer heat wave with three wins each, downing Creekside 2 by a score of 11-4. After the two teams traded wins though the first six games, Endless Summer went crazy with seven straight game wins to seal the victory. Jacob Viani led 10th place Creekside 2 (5-17) with two wins. 7th place Endless Summer improved to 8-14.
Don Q's 2 [8] at Monty's 3 [7]
Don Q's 2 leapfrogged two teams to land in 3rd place after they out-muscled host Monty's 3. Two-game winners Antonio Martines, Steve Myers, and Ismael Huerta all won their openers to give Don Q's 2 an early 4-0 lead. Led by three-game winner Phil Beach, Monty's staged an heroic comeback, and they eventually tied the score at 6-6. Ken Hilton and Steve Myers then put an end to Monty's hopes by defeating Deam Tokumaru and Todd Knudsen. Phil Beach got out his frustrations in the last game of the night by rolling in his league-leading fourth break-and-run of the season. Both of these teams are now tied with Old King's Road 1 at 16-6. Monty's 3 slipped from 3rd to 4th place, behind Don Q's 2. Monty's grueling schedule continues next week with a match at 1st place Cliff Room 4, and continues the following week at home against A Division 2nd place Monty's 2. Don Q's 2 has two tough home matches remaining on their schedule against Cliff Room 2 and Don Q's 1.
Inter-Division
Sportsman 1 [12] at Sportsman 2 [3]
Chris "The Ripper" Ackler and Chuke "Pupper Upper" Prajapati both had three wins for Sportsman 1 in a 12-3 win against hometown rival Sportsman 2. Sportsman 1 was a team on a mission as they won 8 of the first 9 games. With the win, 3rd place Sportsman 1 finally enjoys some breathing room in A Division. They now hold a one match and eight game-win lead over 4th place Break Time 1. Adriana Vega, Derrick Craig, and Anthony Saenz each had one game win for last place Sportsman 2 (3-19).
Break Time 1 [6] at Break Time 5 [9]
2nd place Break Time 5 kept pace with division leading Cliff Room 4 as they downed hometown rival Break Time 1 by a 9-6 count. After losing 5 of his last 10 games, Mike Rys got back on track with three wins to lead Break Time 5 (18-4). After Break Time 1 captain Andre Aparicio opened the match with a win against Dave Thomas, Break Time 5 responded by winning five straight games and were never threatened after that. Marc Alexander and Chris Atkins led 4th place Break Time 1 (15-7) with two wins each. With the loss, Break Time 1 will now probably need Sportsman 1 to lose 3 of their next 4 games to have a chance at climbing back into 3rd place and finishing in the money.
