Weekly Review - Winter 2008/09 Week 23

A Division

Bak Dor 2 [1] at Break Time 1 [14]
Break Time 1 (16-7) charged into a 3rd place tie in A Division with a 14-1 thumping of Bak Dor 2.   Break Time entered the night one match and eight games behind Sportsman 1, who lost 9-6 to Moose Lodge.   Ray Arias was the top scorer for Break Time.   Ray got his first three-win night of 2009 and collected his second table run of the season.   Paul Williams, Chris Atkins, and George Guerrero also had three win nights.   Bak Dor's "Super Mario" Reyes kept the score from being a shut-out with a table run in game 13.   10th place Bak Dor 2 fell to 6-17.

Cliff Room 3 [2] at Monty's 2 [13]
Captain Alfonso Lazaro had three wins and two tables run in Monty's destruction of Cliff Room 3.   After Cliff Room's Greg Contreras won the opening game, Monty's won the next 11.   Mundo Burques and Andres Cortes also had three wins for 2nd place Monty's 2 (20-3).   With the win, Monty's has clinched a top-two finish.   Tony Lenzi had the other game win for 11th place Cliff Room 3 (6-17).

Don Q's 1 [11] at Cliff Room 1 [4]
1st place Don Q's 1 won the first four games at Cliff Room 1 and cruised to an easy 11-4 victory.   Jim Holloway and Robert Rosa led the way for Don Q's with three wins each.   Rosa, the division leader, maintained his 40 point lead over Holloway, who is in 2nd place.   Four Cliff Room players had one win each; Pat Wieser, Dave Clark, Eddie Velez, and Gene Manriquez.   7th place Cliff Room 1 (9-14) fell two matches behind Monty's 1 with three matches to go.   Cliff Room defeated their three remaining opponents in the first half of the season, and if they can repeat that feat they will need Monty's 1 to lose two matches to have a chance at making the playoffs.   Monty's remaining opponents are Break Time 2, Sportsman 1, and Creekside 1.

Monty's 1 [11] at Tiburon Tavern [4]
6th place Monty's 1 (11-12) moved one step closer to securing the final playoff position with an 11-4 win at Tiburon Tavern.   Monty's was led by three-game winner Joe Mesa.   After losing 9 of 12 games, Mesa has now won four in-a-row.   Tiburon's Craig Keefer had his second straight three-win week.   Last place Tiburon Tavern fell to 1-22.

Moose Lodge [9] at Sportsman 1 [6]
Led by three-game winner "Grizzly" Bear Hernandez, the Moose Lodge stampeded Sportsman 1 by a score of 9-6.   This match wasn't as close as the score indicates.   The Moose won the first five games, including a Hernandez table run, and had the match won before the beer frame orders had been taken.   3rd place Sportsman 1 (16-7) won 5 of the last 6 games to keep the score respectable, but more importantly, it kept them from dropping into 4th place.   Break Time 1 was busy winning 14 games against Bak Dor 2, moving them into a 3rd place tie with Sportsman.   This was the first step in the quest for a money position for 5th place Moose Lodge (15-8).   They not only need to win the rest of their matches, they need Break Time 1 to lose to Monty's 2, and they need Sportsman 1 to lose 2 of their next 3 matches.   Sportsman was led by two-game winner Chris "The Ripper" Ackler.

B Division

Break Time 5 [11] at Old Town Tavern [4]
Break Time 5 came back from a 2-0 deficit to post an 11-4 win at Old Town Tavern, and in the process they moved into a 1st place tie with Cliff Room 4.   Dave Thomas and Ed Martin both had three wins for Break Time 5 (19-4).   Mike Craig, Billy Beebe, Jay Younger, and Marty Schwind each had one win for last place Old Town Tavern (4-19).   Break Time 5 has a much tougher remaining schedule than Cliff Room 4, so they will have to play their best to maintain the top spot in B Division.

Cliff Room 2 [7] at Don Q's 2 [8]
3rd place Don Q's 2 (17-6) let a 5-1 lead slip away but finished strong to win 8-7 against visiting Cliff Room 2.   Steve Myers opened the match with a break-and-run and followed with a table run in game 6, giving Don Q's a 5-1 lead.   Three-game winner Brendan Mackey led the Cliff Room comeback, and by game 12 the score was tied at 6-6.   Antonio Martines put Don Q's ahead with a game 13 win over Albert Covarrubias.   Cliff Room 2 team leader Brandon Teris knotted the score at 7-7 with his win over captain Ismael Huerta.   Jim Zambelli, subbing for Peter Garcia, then gave Don Q's the victory with his hill-hill win over Paul Lacey.   Zambelli's win must have been extra satisfying, as it came against the team that tossed him aside earlier in the season.   With the huge win by 4th place Monty's 3, Don Q's game lead over Monty's 3 has shrunk to 7 games.   With three more match wins Don Q's 2 would have an outside chance at moving up to 2nd place, but on the other side of the coin, one loss could send them out of the money.   6th place Cliff Room 2 (15-8) will need a miracle to finish any higher in the standings.

Endless Summer [5] at Break Time 2 [10]
Host Break Time 2 took advantage of a 4-man Endless Summer team, winning 10-5.   Endless Summer held leads of 3-1 and 5-3, but Break Time won the last seven games of the night to seal the victory.   Ed Ogden ended his 3-9 slump with three wins, which was tops for 9th place Break Time 2 (7-16).   Nick Conforti and Adam Priddy both had two wins for 7th place Endless Summer (8-15).

Monty's 3 [12] at Cliff Room 4 [3]
In a match they had to win to keep their 3rd place hopes alive, Monty's 3 did just that, hammering host Cliff Room 4 by a 12-3 score.   Monty's jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and after Cliff Room won the next two games, Monty's won 8 of the last 9 to secure the victory.   Todd Knudsen, Kevin Farrell, and Kerry Randolph all had three wins for 4th place Monty's 3 (17-6).   Maurice Elias, Murray Peden, and Fahim Azizi scored the lone Cliff Room game wins.   This was by far the worst loss for 1st place Cliff Room 4 (19-4).   Their 12 game losses enabled Break Time 5 to catch them in the standings.   Break Time holds the tie-breaking advantage over Cliff Room, but Cliff Room has an easier remaining schedule than Break Time.   The road doesn't get any easier for Monty's 3 as they must still face Monty's 2 and Break Time 5.

Sportsman 2 [10] at Carp Billiards [5]
Anthony Saenz and Adriana Vega both won three games for Sportsman 2 in a 10-5 match win at Carp Billiards.   After Carp Billiards won the opening game, Sportsman took control by winning the next 6 games.   Colin Clayton led 8th place Carp Billiards (7-16) with two wins.   The win enabled Sportsman 2 (4-19) to climb out of the B Division cellar and into 11th place.

Inter-Division

Old King's Road 1 [8] at Old King's Road 2 [7]
Old King's Road 1 jumped out to a 4-1 lead against hometown rival Old King's Road 2, then hung on to post a narrow 8-7 victory.   Pete Conover helped get things going for OKR1 with a table run in game 4, and after three-game winner Sam Auchincloss followed with his first win of the night, OKR1 held a 4-1 lead.   OKR2 captain Eric Kaiser stopped the bleeding with his first career table run, sparking his team to a rally that tied the score at the beer frame.   Tony Allred, Conover, and Auchincloss then went back-to-back-to-back to clinch the match win for OKR1.   With the win, 5th place Old King's Road 1 remains tied with Monty's 3 and Don Q's 2 at 17-6, but OKR1 has significantly fewer game wins.   9th place Old King's Road 2 fell to 6-17.

Creekside 1 [7] at Creekside 2 [8]
8th place Creekside 1 (9-14) imploded for the second straight week, losing 8-7 to 10th place Creekside 2 (6-17).   Led by two-game winners Keith Gruel, Justin Brown, and Jessica Carr, Creekside 2 won 8 of the first 10 games to secure the victory.   Creekside 1 finished strong with 5 straight game wins, but it was too late by then.   Brian Guajardo and Mark Weingatner led Creekside 1 with two wins each.   Back-to-back losses to Tiburon and Creekside 2 have eliminated any realistic chance that Creekside 1 had for a playoff spot.   Creekside 2's six match wins triples their previous season high.
