Weekly Review - Winter 2008/09 Week 24

A Division

Break Time 1 [4] at Moose Lodge [11]
5th place Moose Lodge kept their 3rd place hopes alive with a convincing 11-4 win at home against 4th place Break Time 1.   Captain Sebastian Aldana led the Moose with three wins and a table run.   Fellow Moose Chuy Martinez also had three wins.   This match was over early after the Moose Lodge (16-8) won 10 of the first 11 games.   George Guerrero had two wins for Break Time 1 (16-8).

Cliff Room 1 [9] at Cliff Room 3 [6]
7th place Cliff Room 1 (10-14) overcame a 5-3 deficit to finish strong and post a 9-6 win against hometown rival Cliff Room 3.   Cliff Room 1 jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but Cliff Room 3 responded with four straight game wins to go ahead by a 5-3 score.   Cliff Room 1's David Clark opened the beer frame with a table run, and teammate Pat Wieser followed up with a break-and-run, and it was all Cliff Room 1 after that.   Cliff Room 1's playoff hopes are fading as they are two matches and 12 games behind Monty's 1 with two matches to play.   Robert Alley led 11th place Cliff Room 3 (6-18) with two wins.

Old King's Road 2 [6] at Bak Dor 2 [9]
Old King's Road 2 fell behind 6-1 at Bak Dor 2 and could not catch up, losing 9-6.   "Super Mario" Reyes had three wins to lead Bak Dor 2 (7-17).   Ian Cox and Everett Plante had two wins each to pace Old King's Road 2 (6-18).   These two teams traded places in the standings...Bak Dor 2 is now in 9th place while OKR2 is in 10th place.

Sportsman 1 [10] at Creekside 1 [5]
Creekside 1 was a thorn in Sportsman 1's side early in their match, but the Sportsman women showed the Sportsman men the way to a 10-5 victory.   Sami "Cast Iron Bitch" Glover and Leana "Mississippi Hellcat" Finley both won three games to lead Sportsman 1 to a 17-7 record and sole possession of 3rd place in A Division.   After the two teams traded wins through the first 8 games, Sportsman went on a tear, winning 6 straight games to secure the match.   All five Creekside players won one game.   With the loss, 8th place Creekside 1 (9-15) is officially eliminated from the playoff race.

Tiburon Tavern [1] at Don Q's 1 [14]
A few of the Tiburon players were angry that they had to play in a place that couldn't serve beer, and they refused to play.   Tiburon was unable to find a sub, so they played one man short.   Don Q's 1 took full advantage, winning 14-1.   Brent Boone led Don Q's with three non-forfeit game wins.   Clint Dibala scored Tiburon's only win in the opening game.   1st place Don Q's 1 (22-2) can breathe a lot easier now after 2nd place Monty's 2 lost to Monty's 3.   Last place Tiburon Tavern fell to 1-23.   Don Q's beer license should be renewed in a few weeks.

B Division

Old Town Tavern [4] at Old King's Road 1 [11]
"Pistol Pete" Conover had three wins and a table run to lead Old King's Road 1 to an easy 11-4 victory over visiting Old Town Tavern.   OKR won the first four games and were never threatened.   Tony Allred and Sam Auchincloss also had three wins for 5th place Old King's Road 1 (18-6).   Four Old Town players had one win each.   With the loss, last place Old Town Tavern fell to 4-20.

Carp Billiards [4] at Break Time 5 [11]
2nd place Mike Rys had three wins and a break-and-run to lead Break Time 5 to an 11-4 win against Carp Billiards and significantly close the gap between himself and division leader Maurice Elias.   Elias's once insurmountable lead has shrunk to just 25 points.   Break Time's 11 game wins were also two more than Cliff Room 4's 9 game wins, giving Break Time 5 sole possession of 1st place in B Division for the first time all season.   This match quickly got out of hand after Break Time won the first 7 games.   Four Carp Billiards players had one win each.   With the loss, Carp Billiards (7-17) fell to 9th place.

Cliff Room 4 [9] at Cliff Room 2 [6]
Cliff Room 4 avenged their week 11 loss against Cliff Room 2 by defeating Jack Poet and Co. by a score of 9-6.   Cliff Room 4 came out firing with three tables runs in the first frame (Fahim Azizi, Greg Niwa, and Terry Howell), and they held a commanding 7-1 lead after eight games.   Two game winners Brendan Mackey and Brandon Teris did their best to get Cliff Room 2 back in the match but it was too little, too late.   Despite the win, 2nd place Cliff Room 4 (20-4) fell out of 1st place for the first time since the end of October.   Cliff Room 2 (15-9) has clinched 6th place in B Division.

Creekside 2 [5] at Sportsman 2 [10]
Kate Williams and Anthony Saenz both had three wins to lead Sportsman 2 to a 10-5 win at home against Creekside 2.   Sportsman 2 jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Creekside was able to close the gap to a single game entering the beer frame.   That's when Sportsman turned on the afterburners, winning the last four games to pull away.   Captain Keith Gruel led 10th place Creekside 2 (6-18) with two wins.   This was the second straight win for 11th place Sportsman 2 (5-19), their longest win streak of the season.

Don Q's 2 [14] at Endless Summer [1]
3rd place Don Q's 2 must be able to smell the prize money.   Ismael Huerta's crew went in to Endless Summer and demolished them, 14-1.   Huerta, Steve Myers, Antonio Martines, and Jim Zambelli all had three wins for Don Q's 2 (18-6), who extended their game lead over 4th place Monty's 3 to 12 games.   Captain Adam Priddy scored the lone game win for 7th place Endless Summer (8-16).

Inter-Division

Monty's 2 [6] at Monty's 3 [9]
For the second time this season Monty's 3 was able to handle defending champion Monty's 2, as Debbie Beach's squad rolled to a 9-6 victory.   Three-game winner Phil Beach helped Monty's 3 jump out to a 3-0 lead; a lead that Monty's 2 was never able to chip away at.   Two-game winner Andres Cortes won game 10 to bring Monty's 2 to within two games at 6-4, but Kevin Farrell responded with a break-and-run, followed by Phil Beach's final win - the death blow.   The loss crippled the 1st place hopes of 2nd place Monty's 2 (20-4).   4th place Monty's 3 (18-6) remains in a three-way tie with 3rd place Don Q's 2 and 5th place Old King's Road 1.   Monty's 3 trails Don Q's 2 by 12 games but has a 15 game lead over OKR 1.

Break Time 2 [7] at Monty's 1 [8]
6th place Monty's 1 put their playoff lives in jeopardy Tuesday night, only to escape unscathed with an 8-7 win against Break Time 2.   Monty's had to use a sub for Josue Solis, but their sub disappeared after his first game.   Break Time capitalized by winning four straight games to go on the hill at 7-5.   Two-game winners Ernesto Sanchez and Jesse Oliver won to tie the score at 7-7, and it was time for the Monty's sub to play.   Rosendo Ramirez happened to be in the bar watching the Monty's 2 - Monty's 3 match, so Monty's 1 borrowed his services for the last game.   Ramirez beat Bill Fedderson to give Monty's 1 to victory.   Break Time complained that the substitution was a violation of the rules, but since Ramirez is a Monty's sub and was not playing in the other match, he could legally substitute.   Monty's 1 improved their record to 12-12 and took a strangle hold on the final playoff spot.   They lead 7th place Cliff Room 1 by two matches and 12 games.   Dennis Nupdal and Ed Ogden led Break Time 2 (7-17) with two wins each.   Despite the loss, Break Time 2 moved up one spot to 8th place.
