Weekly Review - Winter 2008/09 Week 25

A Division

Bak Dor 2 [2] at Monty's 2 [13]
With their big 13-2 win at home against Bak Dor 2, 2nd place Monty's 2 (21-4) moved closer to 1st place, keeping alive their chances of catching Don Q's 1.   In order to finish in 1st place, Monty's 2 must win big next week at Break Time 1 and pray for a Sportsman 1 victory at Don Q's 1.   Bak Dor's Rosalie Breeland shocked #5 Andres Cortes in the opening game of this match, but Monty's took the next 13 games to win easily.   Cortes bounced back from his loss to post a table run in his next game.   Alfonso Lazaro, Jim Steele, and Mundo Burques were all three-game winners for Monty's 2.   Rundi Culp ended Bak Dor's night with their only other game win.   9th place Bak Dor 2 fell to 7-18.

Break Time 1 [12] at Old King's Road 2 [3]
4th place Break Time 1 (17-8) won the first six games at Old King's Road 2 and cruised to a 12-3 victory.   Marc Alexander and Andre Aparicio led the way for Break Time with three wins each.   Teammate George Guerrero started his night off with his fifth table run of the season.   Ian Cox had two wins for 10th place Old King's Road 2 (6-19).   An upset win next week at #2 Monty's 2 could vault Break Time 1 into 3rd place.

Cliff Room 3 [6] at Tiburon Tavern [9]
Craig Keefer had three wins for Tiburon Tavern, and Tiburon won their second match of the season, 9-6, over visiting Cliff Room 3.   Three-game winner Ray Zielonko gave Cliff Room an early 1-0 lead, but Tiburon responded by quickly going ahead, 5-2.   Cliff Room was able to tie the score at 5-5 going into the beer frame, but Tiburon won the next three games to clinch the match.   After starting the season 0-21, last-place Tiburon Tavern (2-23) has won 2 of their last 4 matches.   11th place Cliff Room 3 fell to 6-19.

Monty's 1 [7] at Sportsman 1 [8]
What first looked like a blowout quickly turned into an exciting match at Sportsman.   Sportsman 1's Rick "Mad Ass" Hemmings sparked a 4-0 run to open the match after he broke-and-ran on Monty's captain Ernesto Sanchez.   Behind two-game winners Joe Mesa and John Bushnell, Monty's mounted a great comeback, winning 6 of 8 games to tie the score at 6-6.   Leana "Mississippi Hellcat" Finley then ended Monty's hot streak with her third win of the night, and captain Chris "The Ripper" Ackler followed with his third win to seal the Sportsman victory.   Win or lose, 6th place Monty's 1 (12-13) was virtually assured of a playoff position.   Monty's 1 only needs a combination of 5 games wins or Cliff Room 1 game losses next week to clinch 6th place.   This win was critical for 3rd place Sportsman 1 (18-7).   Sportsman now leads 4th place Break Time 1 by one match and two games.   Both teams have tough finishing matches; Sportsman travels to #1 Don Q's 1 and Break Time hosts #2 Monty's 2.

Moose Lodge [7] at Creekside 1 [8]
To have any chance at finishing in the team money, the Moose Lodge needed a huge win at Creekside 1.   Instead, they came away scratching their heads after losing 8-7.   Creekside 1 jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, but behind Juan Manzo's three wins and a break-and-run, the Moose were able to win 5 of 7 games to take a 7-6 lead.   Creekside's Krista Topete tied the score with a win over Jorge Guerrero, and Krista's father Ricardo Topete knocked off captain Sebastian Aldana to give Creekside the victory.   5th place Moose Lodge (16-9) will most likely face Monty's 3 in the first round of the playoffs.   8th place Creekside 1 improved to 10-15.

B Division

Creekside 2 [4] at Carp Billiards [11]
John James and Colin Clayton both had three-win nights for Carp Billiards as they destroyed visiting Creekside 2 by an 11-4 tally.   Captain Keith Gruel played all his games first, giving Creekside an early 2-1 lead.   Carp Billiards responded with four straight wins and were never threatened from there on out.   With the win, Carp Billiards (8-17) moves up two spots to 7th place.   Creekside 2 (6-19) fell one spot to 11th place.

Endless Summer [4] at Cliff Room 4 [11]
Cliff Room 4 finished strong at home against Endless Summer, winning 11-4, and regained the lead in B Division.   Endless Summer kept the score close through the first two frames, but Cliff Room took the last five games to win going away.   Greg Niwa and Murray Peden led the way for Cliff Room with three wins each.   Four Endless Summer players had one win each.   1st place Cliff Room 4 (21-4) now leads 2nd place Break Time 5 by a single game.   Cliff Room 4 can breathe easy...they next face the team with the worst record in the league, Tiburon Tavern, while Break Time 5 must travel to 4th place Monty's 3.   With the loss, Endless Summer (8-17) fell to 8th place.

Monty's 3 [8] at Old Town Tavern [7]
Red-hot Monty's 3, fresh off of wins over #1 Cliff Room 4 and #2 Monty's 2, had a miserable time handling last-place Old Town Tavern, but they were able to pull up their boot straps and eke out an 8-7 victory.   The two teams traded wins through the first 7 games, then two-game winners Billy Beebe and Jay Younger helped Old Town win three straight games to take a 6-4 lead.   Monty's 3 finally woke up, winning the next four games to secure the match.   Todd Knudsen, Phil Beach, and Kevin Farrell all had two wins for 4th place Monty's 3 (19-6).   Monty's 3 can still finish in the money if they beat #2 Break Time 5 and #10 Sportsman 2 knocks off Don Q's 2.   Old Town Tavern fell to 4-21.

Old King's Road 1 [7] at Break Time 5 [8]
In a match that was almost the mirror image of their first meeting, Break Time 5 was able to come from behind and edge Old King's Road 1 by an 8-7 score.   Pete Conover started his three-win night off with a table run, leading OKR to an early 5-3 lead.   Dave Thomas then got the Break Time ball rolling with the first of his two game wins, and Dave's teammates added three more wins to put Break Time ahead 7-5.   Rachel Johnson kept OKR alive with a nice win against Ed Martin, but Thomas knocked off Andy Reagan to put Break Time over the top.   The last game of the night featured two of the top three shooters in B Division, Conover and Break Time's Mike Rys.   Rys had entered the night in 2nd place, 10 points ahead of Conover.   After the first two rounds of play, Conover had taken a 5 point lead.   "Pistol Pete" was able to beat Mike and extend his lead to 15 points with one week to play.   The difference between 2nd and 3rd place is $100.   Despite the win, 2nd place Break Time 5 (21-4) fell one game behind 1st place Cliff Room 4, who won 11-4.   5th place Old King's Road 1 fell to 18-7.

Sportsman 2 [8] at Break Time 2 [7]
After starting the season 3-19, Sportsman 2 won their third straight match to improve their record to 6-19 and move up to 10th place.   Sportsman's latest victim was Break Time 2.   Two-game winner Avonell Ogden helped Break Time jump out to a 2-0 lead, but Sportsman won the next five games and never trailed from there.   Break Time was able to close the gap to one game, but two-game winners Kate Williams and Anthony Saenz won back-to-back games to put Break Time out of their misery.   Derrick Craig also had two wins for Sportsman, as did Break Time's Bob Freed.   With the loss, Break Time 2 (7-18) fell to 9th place.

Inter-Division

Don Q's 1 [7] at Don Q's 2 [8]
For the second time this season, Don Q's 2 was able to come from behind and defeat 1st place Don Q's 1 by an 8-7 score.   Don Q's 1 opened the match with fireworks, rolling in a break-and-run and two tables run while running up a 6-4 lead.   Two-game winner Antonio Martines started the beer frame off with a win for Don Q's 2, and his captain, Ismael Huerta, ended the beer frame with his second win of the night, a hill-hill victory over Brent Boone.   Ken Hilton also had two wins for 3rd place Don Q's 2 (19-6).   With two wins, including a break-and-run, Robert Rosa (Don Q's 1) has locked up the A Division points title.   Brent Boone and Jim Holloway both had a table run for Don Q's 1.   The loss wasn't catastrophic for Don Q's 1.   They simply need to beat Sportsman 1 next week (a team they have never lost to) to clinch the A Division team title.   The win was incredibly important for Don Q's 2, however.   They now must only beat 10th place Sportsman 2 to clinch 3rd place and $250.   Had Don Q's 2 lost, they would have needed Monty's 3 to lose to Break Time 5 in the final week of the season.

Cliff Room 2 [7] at Cliff Room 1 [8]
7th place Cliff Room 1 (11-14) kept their miniscule playoff hopes alive with an 8-7 win over 6th place Cliff Room 2 (15-10).   This was Cliff Room 1's second win of the season over Cliff Room 2.   Cliff Room 2 was without one of their big guns, Brandon Teris, but his replacement, Albert Covarrubias, filled in nicely with two game wins.   The lead in this match rocked back-and-forth like a ship in a typhoon.   Jack Poet gave Cliff Room 2 a 1-0 lead with a win over Pat Wieser.   Two-game winners Gene Manriquez and Eddie Velez helped Cliff Room 1 win three straight to take a 3-1 lead.   Cliff Room 2 countered with their own three-game win streak, followed by a four-game Cliff Room 1 streak that put them on the hill at 7-4.   Nick Doerr, Covarubbias and Poet went back-to-back-to-back to tie the score at 7-7, setting up the hill-hill game between Cliff Room 1's David Clark and Cliff Room 2's Brendan Mackey.   Clark got the better of Mackey to give Cliff Room 1 the victory.   Cliff Room 1's only chance at earning a playoff spot is to win at least 11 more games than Monty's 1 in next week's match.
