Weekly Review - Winter 2009/10 Week 3

A Division


Roundin Third 2 [2] at Break Time 4 [13]
1st place Break Time 4 won the first nine games of the match and cruised to a 13-2 victory at home against Roundin Third 2.   Jim Green, Steve Moreno, and Luis Hernandez each had three wins for Break Time 4 (3-0), and their captain, Martin Hernandez, rolled in a break 'n run.   Nick Lamb won both games for Roundin Third, including a nice break 'n run.   With the loss, Roundin Third 2 (0-3) fell to last place in A Division.

Monty's 1 [11] at Cliff Room 4 [4]
John Bushnell and Gerardo Garcia combined for six wins in an 11-4 Monty's 1 victory at Cliff Room 4.   Brenden Selvig and Bobby Tryon both won to give Cliff Room an early 2-1 lead, but Monty's responded by winning 10 of the next 11, capped off by an Ernesto Sanchez break-and-run.   Jaime Garcia and Javier Solis captured the other two Cliff Room game wins.   4th place Monty's 1 remains perfect on the season at 2-0.   Cliff Room 4 (0-3) fell to 12th place.

Sportsman 1 [14] at Creekside 2 [1]
3rd place Sportsman 1 moved to 2-0 with a huge 14-1 victory at Creekside 2.   This match was never in doubt as Sportsman won the first 13 games.   Creekside had several easy shots at the 8-ball but missed all but one.   Josh Gomes, subbing for the honeymooning Sami Glover, led Sportsman with three wins and a break-and-run.   Chris Ackler, Leana Finley, and Harry Peltz also won three games for Sportsman.   Finley (6-0) is now the only player in A Division that is undefeated.   Jacob Viani took the lone Creekside game win.   With the loss, Creekside 2 (1-2) fell two spots to 10th place.

Don Q's 2 [8] at Don Q's 1 [7]
Don Q's 1 stumbled badly coming out of the gate and it cost them dearly in an 8-7 loss to hometown rival Don Q's 2.   Behind Ken Hilton's two wins, one by break-and-run, Don Q's 2 was able to win 8 of the first 10 games.   Don Q's 1 won the remaining five games but it was too little, too late.   Antonio Martinez and Steve Myers had two wins for Don Q's 2.   Don Q's 1 was led by two-game winners Jim Holloway and Jeff Azevedo.   Don Q's 2 (2-1) moved up two spots in the standings to 6th place, while Don Q's 1 (1-2) dropped two spots to 7th place.

Cliff Room 3 [6] at Endless Summer [9]
2nd place Endless Summer (3-0) overcame a 3-1 deficit to post a 9-6 victory at home against Cliff Room 3.   Endless Summer's Nick Doerr had three more wins to improve his season mark to 8-1.   Donald Jordan was a perfect 3-0 for Cliff Room.   With the loss, Cliff Room 3 (1-2) plummeted three spots to 8th place.

Creekside 1 [7] at Sportsman 2 [8]
Sportsman 2 blew an early lead against visiting Creekside 1, but captain Anthony Saenz calmly rolled in a hill-hill win to make Sportsman 8-7 winners.   Saenz and fellow two-game winners Adriana Vega and Andy Reagan helped Sportsman zoom out to a 6-2 lead, but three-game winner Sergio Garcia spearheaded a Creekside comeback to tie the score at 7-7.   Sportsman 2 (2-1) moved up two spots to 5th place.   Despite the loss, Creekside 1 (1-2) moved up one spot to 9th place.

B Division


Break Time 2 [6] at Roundin Third 1 [9]
Three-game winner Kumi Rauf led a spirited Roundin Third 1 squad to a 9-6 victory at home against Break Time 2.   Roundin Third came out firing, winning 8 of the first 10 games to wrap up the match.   Two-game winners Bob Freed and Ed Ogden helped Break Time win 4 of the last 5 games, but it was too late by then.   With the win, Roundin Third 1 improved their record to 2-1 and moved up to 6th place.   12th place Break Time 2 fell to 0-3.

Monty's 2 [15] at Old Town Tavern [0]
For the second week in a row Old Town Tavern is on the schneid.   This time, Monty's 2 was the vanquisher, winning 15-0.   Old Town's losing streak now stands at 31 straight games, the longest in recorded history.   Rigo Morales led Monty's 2 with 40 points as he rolled in a break-and-run to go along with his three wins.   Vicente Mosqueda, Alfonso Lazaro, Ismael Huerta, and George Guerrero also had three wins.   Monty's 2 (3-0) moved up to 2nd place, just behind Cliff Room 2.   These top two teams will lock horns in two weeks up on the Mesa.   Last place Old Town Tavern fell to 0-3.

Moose Lodge 1 [4] at Moose Lodge 2 [11]
Chuy Martinez had three wins to lead the Moose stampede as Moose Lodge 2 out-herded Moose Lodge 1 by an 11-4 score.   Moose Lodge 2 won the first six games of the match and had the victory sewn up by game nine.   Coco Pdilla led Moose Lodge 1 with two wins.   With the win, Moose Lodge 2 (2-1) moved up two spots to 6th place.   13th place Moose Lodge 1 fell to 0-3.

Tiburon Tavern [2] at Monty's 3 [13]
After two tough losses to tough teams, Monty's 3 was able to breathe easy in a 13-2 victory at home against Tiburon Tavern.   Kevin Farrell, Jim Steele, and Phil Beach all had three wins for Monty's 3 (1-2), who moved up two spots to 8th place.   Clint Dibala and Craig Keefer scored the lone Tiburon game wins.   Tiburon Tavern (1-2) fell to 10th place.

Break Time 5 [8] at Cliff Room 1 [7]
Cliff Room 1 overcame an early 2-0 deficit to enter the beer frame with a 6-4 lead, only to lose 4 of the last 5 games and drop a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to visiting Break Time 5.   Two-game winners Dave Thomas and Mike Rys helped Break Time sprint out to an early 2-0 lead, but Cliff Room quickly took the lead back after winning the next three games, capped off by a David Clark break-and-run.   Terry Howell had a table run in game eight to increase Cliff Room's lead to 5-3, and after Clark posted the second of his three game wins, Cliff Room entered the beer frame with a 6-4 lead.   Then Break Time took over, winning four straight games to clinch the victory.   With the win, Break Time 5 (3-0) moved up to 4th place.   With their first loss of the season, Cliff Room 1 (2-1) crashed from 2nd to 5th place in the standings.

Carp Billiards 1 [7] at Brewco Lounge 2 [8]
Carp Billiards nearly pulled off a remarkable come-from-behind win at Brewco Lounge 2, but they fell one game short as Brewco Lounge escaped with an 8-7 victory.   Two-game winners Everett Plante and Ian Cox helped lift Brewco to an early 4-0 lead, but three-game winner Chad Murphy helped Carp Billiards win 7 of the next 9 games to go on the hill at 7-6.   Cox then won to tie the score, and captain Eric Kaiser finished off Carp Billiards with a hill-hill win over H.A. Johnson.   Brewco Lounge 2 remains undefeated at 3-0, but their narrow victory cost them in the standings; they fell from 1st to 3rd place.   11th place Carp Billiards 1 fell to 0-3.

Cliff Room 2 [15] at Bak Dor 2 [0]
Bak Dor 2 did something on Tuesday that has never been done in the history of the league; follow a 15-0 victory with a 15-0 defeat.   Cliff Room's Jim Zambelli had a 45 point night (three wins, a table run and a break 'n run) to increase his B Division points lead to 15 points.   Teammates Paul Lacey, Maurice Elias, Jack Poet, and Albert Covarrubias all had three wins.   With the big win, Cliff Room 2 (3-0) jumped up to first place, just ahead of Monty's 2.   Bak Dor 2 (1-2) fell hard from 6th to 9th place.
