Weekly Review - Winter 2009/10 Week 5

A Division

Endless Summer [4] at Break Time 4 [11]
In one of three Week 5 battles between undefeated teams, 1st place Break Time 4 shined in an 11-4 win against visiting Endless Summer.   Captain Martin Hernandez led his Break Time squad with three wins and a table run.   Teammate and brother Luis Hernandez also had three wins for Break Time 4 (5-0).   Nick Doerr scored two of the four Endless Summer game wins.   Endless Summer (4-1) fell back to 3rd place.

Brewco Lounge 1 [6] at Cliff Room 4 [9]
Cliff Room 4 scored their first match win of the season, a 9-6 victory over visiting Brewco Lounge 1.   Cliff Room looked to be in control of the match early as they won the first three games and held a 5-2 lead after seven games.   But three-game winner Reno King sparked a three-game Brewco rally that tied the score at 5-5 heading into the beer frame.   Cliff Room took over from there, winning 4 of the last 5.   Four Cliff Room players had two wins each, Brenden Selvig, Jaime Garcia, Bobby Tryon, and Josue Solis.   With the win, Cliff Room 4 (1-4) moves up to 11th place.   8th place Brewco Lounge 1 fell to 1-3.

Don Q's 2 [8] at Creekside 2 [7]
Don Q's captain Antonio Martinez had to be taken to the emergency room, leaving Don Q's short one man, but teammates Chris Atkins and Steve Myers stepped up their games, compiled six wins between them, and muscled Don Q's to an 8-7 victory at Creekside 2.   Myers had a table run to give Don Q's an early 2-0 lead, and after seven games Don Q's was ahead 5-2.   Creekside won 4 of the next 5 to tie the score at 6-6, and after the two teams swapped game wins, Myers finished off his perfect night with a hill-hill win against Andrew Wood.   Creekside was led by two game winners Tyler Rosenow and Jacob Viani.   5th place Don Q's 2 improved to 3-1.   Creekside 2 (1-4) fell to 12th place.

Creekside 1 [7] at Don Q's 1 [8]
Jim Holloway's hill-hill break 'n run rescued Don Q's 1 as they had to come from behind to beat visiting Creekside 1.   After three-game winner Mark Weingartner broke-and-ran game eight, Creekside held a 5-3 lead.   Holloway and fellow two-game winners Brent Boone and Larry Smith strung together three wins to put Don Q's back on top at 6-5, but Creekside answered with two straight wins to go on the hill at 7-6.   Boone evened the score at 7-7, then Holloway slammed the door shut with his dramatic run.   6th place Don Q's 1 (3-2) is above .500 for the first time this season.   10th place Creekside 1 fell to 1-4.

Sportsman 1 [8] at Monty's 1 [7]
Sportsman 1 had to come from behind against a pesky Monty's 1 squad.   After Harry "The Hat" Peltz notched the first of his two tables runs, Sportman held a 3-1 lead.   Monty's would never go away, however, and they kept the score close into the beer frame, where back-to-back wins by two-game winners Ernesto Sanchez and Kez Gillatt gave Monty's their first lead of the match at 7-6.   Sportsman's Chris "The Ripper" Ackler and Leana "Mississippi Hellcat" Finley then took advantage of key mistakes by Monty's players, winning the last two games to give Sportsman the victory.   Pete Conover also had two wins, including one table run, for Sportsman 1 (4-0), who moved up to 2nd place.   This was the first loss of the season for 4th place Monty's 1 (3-1).

Cliff Room 3 [5] at Sportsman 2 [10]
With their 10-5 win at Cliff Room 3, Sportsman 2 (3-2) has already surpassed their win total from last season.   Captain Anthony Saenz was a perfect 3-for-3 with a table run for 7th place Sportsman 2.   Captain Keith Baugher had two wins to lead 9th place Cliff Room 3 (1-4).   After Cliff Room jumped out to a 2-1 lead, Sportsman won the next four games to go ahead 5-2.   Cliff Room was able to tie the score at 5-5 going into the beer frame.   The free drinks must have rejuvenated Sportsman, as they won the last five games of the night.

Roundin Third 2 has a BYE

B Division

Carp Billiards 1 [4] at Roundin Third 1 [11]
Roundin Third 1 improved their record to 3-2 with an 11-4 manhandling of visiting Carp Billiards 1.   Roundin Third opened the match with three straight game wins and never looked back.   Kumi Rauf and John Owen combined for six of the eleven Roundin Third game wins.   Dave Deanda had two wins for Carp Billiards.   With the win, Roundin Third 1 moves up to 7th place.   Carp Billiards 1 (0-5) fell one spot to 13th place.

Break Time 2 [8] at Old Town Tavern [7]
The tag-team combo of Ed and Avonell Ogden won all six of their games, helping Break Time 2 get off the schneid and defeat host Old Town Tavern by an 8-7 margin.   After the two teams traded wins early on, two-game winners Michael Craig and Aaron Liskovich helped Old Town stretch out to a 5-3 lead.   The Ogdens then delivered their first one-two punch to tie the score at 5-5.   Craig bested Dennis Nupdal to give Old Town a 6-5 lead, but after captain Bob Freed tied the score at 6-6, the Ogdens delivered the knockout blows with back-to-back wins in game 13 and 14.   With the victory, Break Time 2 (1-4) climbed three spots in the standings to 10th place.   Last place Old Town Tavern fell to 0-5, but this was easily their best showing of the season thus far.

Break Time 5 [8] at Moose Lodge 2 [7]
There were wild momentum swings in the match between Break Time 5 and Moose Lodge 2.   The Moose jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind two-game winners Mario Reyes and Juan Manzo.   Ed Martin had a table run in game 3, sparking Break Time to a three-game rally and a 3-2 lead.   The Moose answered with three straight wins to go up by two at 5-3, but Break Time had the last laugh as they won the next five games to seal the victory.   Mike Rys led Break Time with three wins, including the deciding eighth game win.   Break Time 5 remains undefeated at 5-0, and with the win, they move up to 2nd place in B Division.   The loss hurt Moose Lodge 2 (3-2), as they fell three spots in the standings to 8th place.

Cliff Room 2 [8] at Monty's 2 [7]
The top two teams in B Division, Cliff Room 2 and Monty's 2, went head-to-head at Monty's, and what a show it was.   Maurice Elias won the first of his three game wins to give Cliff Room the early 2-0 lead.   Three-game winner George Guerrero tied the score at 2-2 with his win in game four.   Elias' second win put Cliff Room back on top at 4-2.   Rigo Morales then had a table run to spark Monty's to a three-game rally that put them ahead at 5-4.   Captain Jack Poet scored his only game win in game 11, but it was good enough to give Cliff Room the lead at 6-5.   The two teams traded wins, and after Guerrero finished off his perfect night, the score was tied at 7-7.   That set up the hill-hill game between Elias and Monty's Vicente Mosqueda.   This game took forever, and both men blew several golden opportunities to win.   Mosqueda wound up making one more mistake than Elias, and it cost him the game and the match.   1st place Cliff Room 2 improved their record to 5-0.   This was the first loss for Monty's 2 (4-1) since March 24th.   With the loss, Monty's fell back to 3rd place behind undefeated Break Time 5.

Tiburon Tavern [1] at Cliff Room 1 [14]
Tiburon Tavern was badly out-matched at Cliff Room 1, losing 14-1.   Cliff Room 1 won the first 14 games.   Clint Dibala kept it from being a clean sweep with a win against Dave Clark in the 15th game.   Gene Manriquez, Brian Shillington, Pat Wieser, and Terry Howell all had three wins for Cliff Room 1 (3-2), who moved up two spots to 4th place.   Tiburon Tavern (1-4) fell two spots to 12th place.

Monty's 3 [10] at Brewco Lounge 2 [5]
Monty's 3 and Brewco Lounge 2 entered their match in 7th and 4th place, respectively, but when the night was over, Brewco Lounge watched Monty's vault past them in the standings.   Two-game winners Bryan Lum and Eric Kaiser helped Brewco build an early 3-1 lead, but Monty's took over from there, winning the next seven games, including a Kevin Farrell break-and-run.   Jim Steele led Monty's with three wins.   Both teams now sit at 3-2.   Monty's 2 moved up two spots to 5th place.   Brewco Lounge 2 fell two spots to 6th place.

Moose Lodge 1 [6] at Bak Dor 2 [9]
Daniel Drnavich had his second straight three-win night, leading Bak Dor 2 to a 9-6 victory at home against Moose Lodge 1.   After three-game winner Eddie Velez won his opening game, the Moose held an early 2-0 lead.   Bak Dor responded with three straight wins, and never trailed thereafter.   With the win, Bak Dor 2 (3-2) moved up into a tie for 8th place with Moose Lodge 2.   11th place Moose Lodge 1 fell to 1-4.
