Weekly Review - Winter 2009/10 Week 7

A Division

Cliff Room 3 [3] at Break Time 4 [12]
1st place Break Time 4 turned in another dominating performance, defeating Cliff Room 3 by a 12-3 score.   John Rivetti, Steve Moreno, and Jim Green all had three wins for Break Time, who improved their pristine record to 7-0.   Donald Jordan, Greg Contreras, and Norm Brown each had one win for 12th place Cliff Room 3 (1-6).

Roundin Third 2 [10] at Cliff Room 4 [5]
Roundin Third 2 ended their title as "League's Last Winless Team" as they manhandled host Cliff Room 4, winning 10-5.   Roundin Third opened up a quick 2-0 lead and never looked back; they had the match won by the 10th game.   Nick Lamb led Roundin Third with three wins, though teammate Kathy Boyd almost had her first-ever three win night.   In game three, Kathy had a thin cut on the 8-ball.   The shot was made difficult because the cue ball was millimeters away from the 8-ball, and both balls were near the end rail.   Boyd made the shot, but Cliff Room called a foul.   Roundin Third disputed the call, and after much discussion it was decided that the game should be replayed.   Kathy lost the replay, but her team won the match.   Brothers Josue and Javier Solis led Cliff Room with two wins each.   Roundin Third 2 (1-5) jumped up two spots to 11th place.   Cliff Room 4 (1-6) fell back to last place.

Creekside 1 [10] at Creekside 2 [5]
Matt Topete notched his first-ever three-win night in four seasons of play, helping Creekside 1 defeat hometown rival Creekside 2 by a 10-5 score.   Creekside 1 jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but behind two-game winners Jacob Viani and Justin Brown, Creekside 2 was able to cut that lead to 6-5.   Matt's win in game 12 sparked a four-game Creekside 1 rally that closed out the match.   8th place Creekside 1 (2-4) and 9th place Creekside 2 (2-5) swapped places in the standings.

Sportsman 2 [5] at Don Q's 1 [10]
Host Don Q's 1 overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat their neighbors, Sportsman 2, by a 10-5 score.   Two-game winners Kate Williams and Andy Reagan helped Sportsman jump out to the early lead, but Don Q's, led by three-game winner Robert Rosa, buckled down and quickly regained the lead.   Reagan's second win was a break-and-run; his first ever in league play.   With the win, Don Q's 1 (5-2) moved up into the top 4 in A Division.   7th place Sportsman 2 fell to 3-4.

Don Q's 2 [4] at Monty's 1 [11]
3rd place Monty's 1 hosted 4th place Don Q's 2 in the A Division showcase match of the week, a battle for 3rd place.   This match started off very close as neither team held more than a one-game lead through the first seven games.   It was all Monty's after that.   Kez Gillatt had three wins and Ernesto Sanchez added his second table run of the season as Monty's went on to win 8 of the last 9 games.   Steve Myers had two of the four Don Q's game wins.   Monty's 1 (5-1) held on to 3rd place, while Don Q's 2 (4-2) slipped back to 5th place.

Brewco Lounge 1 [5] at Sportsman 1 [10]
After a shaky start, 2nd place Sportsman 1 regained their composure and pulled away to a solid 10-5 win at home against Brewco Lounge 2.   Once again it was the Leana and Harry show.   Leana Finley and Harry Peltz, the top two players in points and power ranking in A Division, combined for six wins for the second straight week.   Finley's last win was a break-and-run, putting her 5 points ahead of Peltz at the top of the standings.   Brewco captain Tony Allred had three wins and his team was tied with Sportsman after six games, but Sportsman was able to win the next five games to secure the victory.   10th place Brewco Lounge 1 fell to 1-5.

Endless Summer has a BYE
Idle Endless Summer moved up into a 5th place tie with Don Q's 2, who lost to Monty's 1.

B Division

Monty's 3 [10] at Roundin Third 1 [5]
Kerry Randolph and Phil Beach combined for six wins to lift Monty's 3 to a 10-5 victory at Roundin Third 1.   Monty's 3 came out like gangbusters, winning the first four games, but behind two-game winner and team leader Kumi Rauf, Roundin Third was able to cut the deficit to 5-4.   Randolph and Beach responded by winning back-to-back games, sparking Monty's to a five-game rally that sealed the match.   This was a big win for Monty's 3 (5-2), who leaped up two spots in the standings and into a 4th place tie with Brewco Lounge 2.   Roundin Third 1 (3-4) fell back to 8th place.

Carp Billiards 1 [10] at Old Town Tavern [5]
H.A. Johnson and Zack Fisher both went 3-for-3 to lead Carp Billiards to a 10-5 win at Old Town Tavern.   After the two teams traded wins in the first two games, Carp Billiards won four straight and never looked back.   Old Town was led by two-game winners Billy Beebe and Marty Schwind.   10th place Carp Billiards 1 improved their record to 2-5.   Last place Old Town Tavern fell to 1-6.

Tiburon Tavern [6] at Moose Lodge 2 [9]
On land, the moose is mightier than the shark, and that was evident Tuesday as Moose Lodge 2 galloped to a 9-6 win at home against Tiburon Tavern.   Tiburon was able to win 3 of the last 4 games, but the Moose had already nailed down the victory by then.   Mario Reyes was the dominant bull moose as he won all three games for the second time this season.   Kevin Rehak and Clint Dibala each had two wins to pace Tiburon.   With the win, Moose Lodge 2 (4-3) moved up to 7th place.   Last place Tiburon Tavern fell to 1-6.

Break Time 2 [2] at Monty's 2 [13]
Monty's 2 soothed their wounds from two straight heartbreaking 8-7 losses with a 13-2 spanking of Break Time 2.   Break Time's Dennis Nupdal and Ed Ogden each one their first game to keep the score close in the first frame, but Monty's slammed the door shut by winning the last 10 games.   Ismael Huerta, Alfonso Lazaro, and George Guerrero each had three wins for 3rd place Monty's 2 (5-2).   11th place Break Time 2 fell to 1-6.

Moose Lodge 1 [1] at Cliff Room 2 [14]
Cliff Room 2 extended their lead in B Division to 19 games with a 14-1 thrashing of Moose Lodge 1.   When Coco Padilla beat Paul Lacey, the Moose actually held the lead after the first game, but that lead was very short-lived.   Maurice Elias, Jack Poet, Albert Covarrubias, and Jim Zambelli each had three wins for Cliff Room 2 (7-0).   12th place Moose Lodge 1 fell to 1-6.

Cliff Room 1 [7] at Brewco Lounge 2 [8]
In this week's premier match in B Division, host Brewco Lounge 2 rode a fast start to an 8-7 win against the dangerous Cliff Room 1.   If you split this match into halves, Brewco won the first half and Cliff Room won the second.   The difference in the match was Brewco's Bryan Lum, who had three wins and a match-clinching break 'n run.   Pat Wieser had three wins to lead Cliff Room.   With the win, Brewco Lounge 2 (5-2) moved up one spot and into a 4th place tie with Monty's 3.   Cliff Room 1 (4-3) has been on a rollercoaster ride in the standings all season, and this week is no exception as they plummeted two spots to 6th place.

Break Time 5 [10] at Bak Dor 2 [5]
Undefeated Break Time 5 won the first seven games of the match, and while Bak Dor 2 did all they could to climb back, Break Time was able to win easily, 10-5.   Break Time's Mike Rys extended his league-leading winning streak to 12 games, and teammate Ed Martin rolled in his league-leading fourth table run of the season.   Daniel Drnavich had two wins for 9th place Bak Dor 2 (3-4).   2nd place Break Time 5 improved their unblemished record to 7-0.
