Weekly Review - Winter 2009/10 Week 17

A Division

Sportsman 1 [11] at Cliff Room 4 [4]view score sheet
"Pistol Pete" Conover had three wins to pull within 5 points of the A Division lead and help lift 1st place Sportsman 1 (14-1) to an 11-4 victory at Cliff Room 4.   With the aide of two-game winner Fahim Azizi, Cliff Room was able to keep the score close through the first frame, but Sportsman blanked Cliff Room in the second frame to secure the match before the free beers were poured.   Sportsman next hosts 4th place Monty's 1, who gave them fits in their first meeting.   12th place Cliff Room 4 fell to 1-15.

Creekside 1 [2] at Break Time 4 [13]view score sheet
Martin and Luis Hernandez tag-teamed for six wins and two table runs, and host Break Time 4 crushed Creekside 1 by a score of 13-2.   Creekside didn't know what hit them; Break Time won the first 9 games.   Jim Green also had three wins for 2nd place Break Time (14-2).   Sergio Garcia and Ricardo Topete scored the lone game wins for Creekside 1 (5-11), who fell one spot to 9th place.

Roundin Third 2 [2] at Don Q's 1 [13]view score sheet
3rd place Don Q's 1 (13-3) ran their winning streak to three with an easy 13-2 victory at home against Roundin Third 2.   Nick Lamb won the opening game to give Roundin Third the early 1-0 lead, but that was their only bright spot of the match.   Don Q's responded with 9 straight wins to put the match on ice.   Captain Jim Holloway led all scorers with three wins and a table run.   Teammates Jeff Azevedo, Brent Boone, and Robert Rosa also contributed three wins each.   Substitute James Fragoza got the only other Roundin Third game win.   Last place Roundin Third 2 fell to 1-15.

Brewco Lounge 1 [11] at Creekside 2 [4]view score sheet
Chris Forester and Reno King combined for six wins, and Jeremy Warner scored his first-ever break-and-run, as visiting Brewco Lounge 1 hammered Creekside 2 by an 11-4 score.   Things looked good early on for Creekside after they jumped out to a 3-1 lead.   But Brewco bounced back with six straight wins to go on the hill, and Creekside could not recover.   Tyler Rosenow, Justin Brown, Jacob Viani, and Keith Gruel each had one win for 10th place Creekside 2 (5-11).   With the win, Brewco Lounge 1 (5-10) leapfrogged both Creekside teams in the standings, and now sits in 8th place.

Endless Summer [11] at Sportsman 2 [4]view score sheet
Sportsman 2 blew and early advantage against Endless Summer, and once Endless Summer smelled the lead they never looked back, cruising to an 11-4 victory.   Two-game winner Derrick Craig helped Sportsman build a 3-0 lead, but eight games later the match was over.   Three-game winner Kyle Hubert scored his first table run of the season for 5th place Endless Summer (11-5), who moved ahead of idle Don Q's 2 in the standings.   This was perhaps the last good chance for 7th place Sportsman 2 (8-8) to position themselves for a run at the playoffs.

Cliff Room 3 [4] at Monty's 1 [11]view score sheet
4th place Monty's 1 (12-3) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead against visiting Cliff Room 3, but had to wait until the beer frame to celebrate their 11-4 victory.   Cliff Room captain Keith Baugher won both ends of a 4-for-5 run that closed the gap to 5-4, but Monty's responded by winning the remaining six games.   Kez Gillatt led Monty's with three wins and a table run.   11th place Cliff Room 3 fell to 3-13.   Monty's next travels downtown to take on 1st place Sportsman 1.

Cliff Room 2 [13] at Old Town Tavern [2]view score sheet
1st place Cliff Room 2 won the first seven games and cruised to a 13-2 victory at Old Town Tavern.   Ernie Rivas led all scorers with three wins and a table run.   Teammates Jim Zambelli and Maurice Elias also had three wins each.   Laura Craig and Aaron Liskovich scored the lone O.T.T. game wins.   Cliff Room 2 (16-1) heads into next week's big showdown against 2nd place Monty's 2 with a one-match-and-seven-game lead.   Monty's 2 would have to win 12-3 to take the outright lead against Cliff Room 2.   This was the seventh loss in a row for 12th place Old Town Tavern (3-14).

Tiburon Tavern [3] at Monty's 2 [12]view score sheet
2nd place Monty's 2 had little problem handing 13th place Tiburon Tavern, winning 12-3.   After Monty's built a 3-0 lead, Tiburon's Josette DeSoto and Clint Dibala won to close the gap to 4-2.   Monty's quickly ended any suspense by winning the next seven games.   Craig Keefer rounded out the Tiburon scoring with his first table run of the season.   Rigo Morales, Alfonso Lazaro, and Vicente Mosqueda combined for nine wins for Monty's 2 (15-2).   Next on Monty's plate is 1st place Cliff Room 2.   13th place Tiburon Tavern fell to 2-15.

Monty's 3 [7] at Cliff Room 1 [8]view score sheet
4th place Cliff Room 1 (12-5) survived a furious comeback by 5th place Monty's 3 (11-6) to post a narrow 8-7 victory.   These two teams came into this match virtually tied in the standings, so it was no surprise that the match was evenly contested.   Cliff Room, behind two-game winners Brian Shillington, Pat Wieser, and David Clark, won 5 of the first 7 games.   Monty's, behind two-game winners Jim Steele, Todd Knudsen, and Phil Beach, won 5 of the next 7 games.   That left the hill-hill match up to Clark and Monty's Hymie Runyon.   Clark's tentative play worked a little better than Runyon's aggressive play, and Cliff Room came out victorious.

Break Time 2 [9] at Bak Dor 2 [6]view score sheet
Break Time 2 finished strong against Bak Dor 2, pulling away to a 9-6 victory at the Bak Dor.   Three-game winner Dennis Nupdal helped Break Time jump out to a 3-1 lead, but after Bob McLean won the second of his three game wins, Bak Dor had pulled even with Break Time, 5-5.   Nupdal opened the beer frame with his final win, sparking his team to a four-game run that sealed the match for Break Time.   Both teams now sit at 6-11, but Bak Dor's 110 game wins put them in a tie for 9th place, while Break Time's 103 game wins are only good enough for 11th place.

Moose Lodge 1 [6] at Roundin Third 1 [9]view score sheet
Moose Lodge 1 hung tough with host Roundin Third 1, but the Moose's inability to corral Roundin Third's Josh Salvador cost them in a 9-6 loss.   Salvador's three win were key in the victory.   The Moose went ahead early, 2-1, but Roundin Third came right back to take a 4-2 lead.   After R.T. extended that lead to 6-3, the Moose's Jeff Lay won his third game of the night pull his team to within a game at 6-5.   Roundin Third won the next three games to close out the match.   With the win, Roundin Third 1 (6-11) jumped up two spots to 8th place.   This was the thirteenth straight loss for last place Moose Lodge 1 (1-16).

Break Time 5 [14] at Brewco Lounge 2 [1]view score sheet
3rd place Break Time 5 put on a clinic at Brewco Lounge 2, winning 14-1.   Brian Purrington, Bob Pastor, Ed Martin, and Mike Rys each had three wins to help improve Break Time 5's record to 14-3.   Don Perkins got the lone Brewco game win.   After starting the season 9-3, 7th place Brewco Lounge 2 (10-7) has dropped 4 of their last 5 matches to fall out of playoff position.   Things won't get any easier, either.   Three of Brewco's next four matches are against top-five teams.

Carp Billiards 1 [3] at Moose Lodge 2 [12]view score sheet
With a 12-3 win at home against Carp Billiards, 6th place Moose Lodge 2 (11-6) firmed their hold onto a playoff position, and moved within striking distance of 5th place Monty's 3.   Two-game winner Garet Watters helped Carp Billiards keep the score close in the first frame, but the Moose dominated the next two frames and galloped to an easy victory.   Chuy Martinez and Juan Manzo led the Moose with three wins each.   Moose Lodge 2 is now staring at the hardest part of their schedule.   Five of their next six matches are against teams in the top half of the division.   With the loss, Carp Billiards (6-11) fell to 9th place.
