CONGRATULATIONS TO MONTY'S 2
With three grueling match wins on the third day of the Men's Open Team Tournament, Monty's 2 pushed their way to a 49th place finish at the 2011 BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships.   Monty's 2 was one of two teams from the SBPL who did not get a first-round bye, but that didn't seem to matter as they won all three of their opening day matches.   On day two, Monty's had only one match scheduled, and it was against a tough team from Saskatchewan, Canada.
The Canadians got the better of Monty's, sending them to the loser's side of the bracket.   The day-three marathon began at 1:00 pm.   Down 12-11, Monty's had to win the final two games against a team from Chicago to survive.   J.P. Ramirez won on one of the tables to tie the score, leaving the match in the hands of Bill Toy.   Bill almost pulled off an amazing run of several balls, but his 8-ball shot stopped less than an inch from the corner pocket.   All was not lost, because the 8-ball was blocking one of his opponent's balls.   On the very next shot, Bill's opponent attempted to knock his blocked ball away from that corner, but instead he knocked in the 8-ball, giving Monty's the dramatic victory.
Monty's went on to win their next two matches by identical scores of 13-10.   Their last match was against the Canadian team they beat in their very first match on day one, Working Stiffs out of Calgary, Alberta.   Both teams were exhausted from a full day of play, but the Working Stiffs worked through it to win 13-7.   Monty's took home $550 for their efforts.   Their 49th place finish is the tops for any team from the SBPL, equaling the 49th place finish of Don Q's 2 in 2007.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY RETURNS TO DON Q'S

In one of the most dramatic finishes ever in league championship history, Don Q's 4 was able to thwart an heroic comeback by Break Time 4 and win 13-12.

The race-to-13 finals started off looking like a close match as the two teams traded wins through the first eight games.   Don Q's then took control, winning the next 6 games to take a 10-4 lead.

Break Time never panicked.   Brian Soucy picked up his game, won his last three matches, and Break Time was able to string together enough wins to tie the score at 12-12.   Soucy's last match looked like it was going to be the nail in Break Time's coffin.   Mike Rys had an almost straight in, half table 8-ball shot that would have given his team the victory, but Rys fired the 8-ball in and the cue ball followed off the end rail and went all the way back into the opposite corner.

The last match of the night was between Break Time's Martin Hernandez and Don Q's Dave Draeger.   Draeger, who was subbing for the injured Ed Martin, was having a tough night.   Dave only won one of his previous six games.   Hernandez, on the other hand, had won 5 of 7 coming into this hill-hill game.

The game went back and forth until both men had two balls remaining.   Hernandez had locked up one of his balls to Draeger's to keep Dave from running out.   Neither player wanted to break up those two balls.   The two players played at least a dozen safeties between them, jockeying for position.

Finally, Hernandez accidentally sank his one free ball on a safety.   Draeger took the opportunity to break out the two locked-up balls, leaving a very difficult shot for Martin.   Martin smartly played a safety, trying again to lock up his ball with Dave's ball.   However, Draeger was able to see his ball, and he capitalized by running out, giving Don Q's 4 the championship.

Earlier, Break Time 4 handed Monty's 2 their only loss of the season with an equally dramatic 8-7 victory.   Martin Hernandez led Break Time with three wins, but the big pat on the back goes to David Robb.   Robb, a league rookie who had lost his first two games of the match, played in the hill-hill game against league veteran Andres Cortes.   With all eyes on David, he was able to calmly pick apart the table to give Break Time the upset victory.

In the other semifinal match, Don Q's 4 exploded to a 5-1 lead and coasted to an 8-4 victory over Sportsman 1.   Sportsman was able to close the gap to 6-4 before Mike Rys and Steve Myers put Sportman out of their misery.

Monty's 2 beat Sportsman 1 by an 8-5 score in the consolation match.   Rigo Morales had a break-and-run and a table run to lead Monty's.

MIKE RYS - ALL STAR TOURNAMENT CHAMPION
Mike Rys (Don Q's 4) defeated Harry Peltz (Sportsman 1) to win the Winter 2010/11 All-Star Tournament.   In his first match on Sunday, Peltz was knocked into the loser's bracket by Rys, but Harry won five straight to make it to the finals.   Mundo Burquez (Roundin Third 2) and Martin Hernandez (Break Time 4) finished in 3rd and 4th place.   This was Mike's first All-Star tournament win since returning to the league three years ago.   The top four prizes were $700, $400, $250, and $175.

Ken Hilton: Best-of-the-Rest Tournament Champion
CONGRATULATIONS TO KEN HILTON, THE "BEST-OF-THE-REST"
Ken Hilton, Don Q's 2 captain, defeated Gerardo Guerrero to win the Winter 2011 Best-of-the-Rest Tournament.   Gerardo defeated Ken in the winner's bracket finals, but Ken got the better of 3rd place Todd Knudsen to force a rematch in the single race-to-two finals.   Dennis Nupdal finished in 4th place.   These top four finishers automatically qualify for the All-Star Tournament.

WINTER 2011 HELLCAT AWARD - TOP FEMALE PLAYER
Congratulations to Sportsman 2's Adriana Vega!!   Adriana won her second consecutive Hellcat Award as the top female player in the league (after the Hellcat), barely edging out Debbie Beach (Monty's 3) by 6/1000ths of a power ranking point.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A GAME MAKES - WINNING THE CLOSE MATCHES

A lucky roll here, a bad roll there, sometimes just a few shots can make or break your team's season.   No team knows this more than 'A' Division 1st place Don Q's 4, where in the last three weeks just two mistakes in their last shots of the hill-hill match cost them two match wins and opened the door for 2nd place Sportsman 1.   And Don Q's 4 is just five missed shots away from having a perfect season.

Sportsman 1 would be sitting in 1st place right now were it not for a single missed shot in Week 1, yet they are just four lucky rolls (or should I say 'unlucky' rolls) away from being all the way back in 5th place.   Both 3rd place Break Time 4 and 4th place Don Q's 1 are just three games wins away from being atop the division.   Three game wins.   Three missed shots.   First place.   Even 5th place Monty's 3 is only four game wins out of first place.   Yes, every shot matters, and every game win is important.

This is illustrated well in 'B' Division.   This season, 2nd place Roundin Third 2 has had 13 close matches that were decided by one or two games.   They have won 12 of them.   Roundin Third 2 has an excellent chance to finish in 2nd place and earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs, but they are only 11 game wins away from being out of the playoffs altogether.   Win the close games, reap the benefits.

4th place Don Q's 2 (17-6 record) has played in 9 matches where the score was 8-7 or 9-6.   They won all 9 of them.   Don Q's 2 has clinched a playoff spot and can finish no worse than 4th place.   They won the close games.

On the other side of the coin, 7th place Creekside 1 is just two game wins away from being in the playoffs.   8th place Moose Lodge and 9th place Endless Summer are both 4 game wins out of the playoffs.   The combined record of these three teams in close games is 11-30.

To make it to the playoffs you need to find a way to win the close ones.   You may not know it while you are shooting, but the next shot you take could be the one that changes your team's season around, for the better or worse.

TORRANCE LEAGUE IS 2011 SOUTH COAST 8-BALL CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS
The league from Torrance jumped out to a huge day-one lead and withstood a vigorous charge by the Santa Barbara Pool League to win the 2011 South Coast 8-Ball Challenge.   The winner-take-all prize was $1,200.   This year's Challenge was held in the same location as last year; The Arena Bar in Simi Valley.   Four 10-person teams participated; Oxnard 162, Torrance 241, and two teams from the Santa Barbara Pool League.   After Saturday's singles and doubles play, Torrance held a big 50-point lead over Oxnard and SBPL-A.   Despite losing twice to Santa Barbara in team play, Torrance was able to hold onto their 50-point lead and earn their first title with a score of 547.   SBPL-A finished in second place with 497 points.   Oxnard was third with 448 points.   SBPL-B finished in 4th place with 221 points.   Santa Barbara's Ernie Rivas went 17-2 in singles play and was able to edge Torrance's Kevin Nakamura for the men's Most Valuable Player trophy.   The award is given to the player who scored the most points over the two-day competition.   The women's MVP race was just as close as Oxnard 162's Aimee Super had to win her last game of the Challenge to pass Torrance's Angela Ting.   Leana Finley was the top-scoring woman player from the Santa Barbara Pool League.   Leana finished in 4th place.

RULE CLARIFICATION: MISCUES ON THE BREAK
With the recent change in rules that says that you have ball-in-hand anywhere on the table if your opponent fouls on the break, there has been some confusion over what options you have if your opponent miscues and either misses the rack completely or barely spreads the balls out.

First of all, the two rules that govern your options are the LEGAL SHOT rule and the LEGAL BREAK rule.   In order for a shot to be legal you must contact a legal object ball and either pocket a ball or drive a ball to a rail.   In order for a break to be legal you must either pocket a ball or drive four object balls to a rail.   Thus, it is possible to have a LEGAL SHOT on an ILLEGAL BREAK, in case you drive between 1 and 3 balls to a rail.

SITUATION 1: Your opponent miscues on the break and barely touches the rack of balls.   The balls spread out a little bit, the cue ball contacts the end rail after hitting the rack and comes to rest in the center of the table.
This is NOT A FOUL.   Your opponent hit a legal shot, but since nothing was pocketed and four object balls did not touch a rail, it is an ILLEGAL BREAK.   You have three options:
a. Play the ball where it lies.   Table is open.   You must call ball and pocket.
b. Re-rack the balls and break.
c. Re-rack the balls and have your opponent break.

SITUATION 2: Your opponent miscues on the break, barely touches the rack of balls, and neither the cue ball nor any object ball touches a rail.
This is a foul. AND an illegal break.   You have three options:
a. Take ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.   Table is open.   You must call ball and pocket.
b. Re-rack the balls and break.
c. Re-rack the balls and have your opponent break.

SITUATION 3: Your opponent miscues on the break, and the cue ball never touches any object ball.
This is a foul. AND an illegal break.   You have three options:
a. Take ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.   Table is open.   You must call ball and pocket.
b. Re-rack the balls and break.
c. Re-rack the balls and have your opponent break.

SITUATION 4: When taking practice strokes while lining up for the break shot, your opponent's cue tip accidentally touches the cue ball.
This is a foul. AND an illegal break.   You have three options:
a. Take ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.   Table is open.   You must call ball and pocket.
b. Re-rack the balls and break.
c. Re-rack the balls and have your opponent break.

In situation 3 and 4, even though you have the option to put the cue ball right next to the rack of balls, it would always be best to re-break from behind the head string.   That way, you do not have to call ball and pocket.

One word of caution, if you miscue on the break, resist the urge to stop the cue ball with your stick.   I see people do this all the time.   Allow the cue ball to come to rest, just in case the cue ball hits the rack.

By the way, for those going to Las Vegas...if you miscue on the break and reach out with your cue to stop the cue ball, you will be given a deliberate foul warning.   Second and subsequent violations during a match is loss of game.

POOL LEAGUE LEGEND BEAR HERNANDEZ (1946 - 2011)
Bear Hernandez, longtime member and officer of the Santa Barbara Pool League, has passed away at the age of 64.   As a decades-long member of the Santa Barbara Pool League, Bear played for many teams, was Secretary / Treasurer of the pool league for many years, and was voted in as one of the charter members of the current Board of Directors.   Bear was truly one of the most unique and colorful members of our league, and will be missed.   As many of you are aware, Bear had battled will diabetes for many years.

NEW RULE 3.3.5 - PLAYING OUT OF TURN
It is the responsibility of BOTH team captains to ensure that the correct players from BOTH teams are at the table. If a player plays out-of-order, the fault lies with BOTH team captains. Every player should review the score sheet before the start of the match to see when they are playing and whom they are playing against. If the wrong two players are discovered to be at the table:
  1. If the game is NOT complete, play will stop immediately and the correct two players will be placed at the table to play a new game.
  2. If the game is completed AND those two players are scheduled to play each other later in the match, it will be scored where it would have been scored if the players had played at the proper time.
  3. If the game is completed AND those two players are NOT scheduled to play each other later in the match, the game does not count, regardless of the outcome. Start a new game with the correct two players.

RULE CLARIFICATION - TABLE RUN TRY ON A FORFEIT   Rule 3.2.7 in the league rules allows players to attempt a break-and-run in case their opponent has forfeited the game.   CLARIFICATION: You may attempt a break-and-run whether or not it was your turn to break.   Keep in mind that you will lose the game if you illegally pocket the 8-ball, jump the 8-ball off the table, or if you foul or scratch when pocketing a called 8-ball shot.

ISMAEL HUERTA EN FUEGO AT DON Q'S 10-BALL TOURNEY   Ismael Huerta sliced through the loser's bracket and defeated Josh Gomes twice in the finals to win the 10-10-10 Ball Tournament at Don Q's.   Huerta played near flawless pool, taking full advantage of every opponent's mistake.   Ismael started off his Sunday by beating Al Vafa 4-1.   After friend and teammate J.P. Ramirez forfeited, Ismael defeated Oxnard's Steve Choy and Brent Boone to advance to the finals against Josh Gomes.   In the finals, Huerta won the first set 5-3.   In the second set, Gomes blew a golden opportunity by missing a routine 10-ball while on the hill at 4-3.   Ismael took advantage and won the final game, winning the final set 5-4.   Huerta won $440 for 1st place.   Gomes' runner-up prize was $220.   3rd place Brent Boone won $120.   Steve Choy cashed $60 for 4th place.   Ramirez and Jim Zambelli both got their money back ($40) for 5th place.

REMINDER - NO MORE "IN THE KITCHEN"   Just a reminder that when you scratch or foul on the break, your opponent has BALL IN HAND anywhere on the table.   No more "behind the line".

MONTY'S 2 WINS THRILLER OVER DON Q'S 1   The top two teams from the Summer season got together at Break Time to compete in a race-to-13 challenge match to see who was king.   Both Don Q's 1 and Monty's 2 finished last season undefeated in their divisions.   To make it more interesting, all players threw $50 into the hat.   The match was officiated by league president Chris Ackler, and over a dozen spectators from the league showed up to watch.   Don Q's got a good break from the gate, winning the first three games.   But Monty's quickly countered with five straight wins to take a 5-3 lead.   Don Q's scratched and clawed their way back into the match, and after Mike Rys scored his third win of the night, Don Q's had regained the lead, 9-8.   The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way.   Andres Cortes, the only four-game winner for either team, beat Rys to put Monty's on the hill, 12-11.   Ismael Huerta then beat Jeff Azevedo to clinch the victory for Monty's.   Click here to see the score sheet for the match.

ANTHONY SAENZ - ALL-STAR TOURNEY CHAMPION   Sportsman 2 captain Anthony Saenz, the #22 seed, defeated "A" Division champion Chris Ackler to win the Summer 2010 All-Star Tournament.   On day one, Anthony beat 15th seeded Andres Cortes before falling to #5 seed Mike Rys.   On the loser's side, Anthony defeated his teammate, Derrick Craig, to advance to the single-elimination finals.   In the finals, Anthony bested #10 seed Steve Myers, #32 seed Dave Thomas, and #16 seed J.P. Ramirez to reach the final match.   Ackler had a tougher route to the final match, defeating #9 seed Ed Martin, #1 seed Brent Boone, and #5 seed Mike Rys.   Prior to the final match, Ackler and Saenz agreed to split the 1st and 2nd place prize.   Each man will receive $275.   The final cash payouts are now available.

TIM SCHULTZ IS BEST-OF-THE-REST   Tim Schultz (Sportsman 1) outlasted 45 other players to win the Summer 2010 Best-of-the-Rest Tournament.   After losing to Terry Howell (Cliff Room 1) in the finals of the winner's bracket, Schultz defeated Brian Shillington (Cliff Room 1) to face Howell again in the finals.   Howell took the first game, but Schultz's patience and good safety play enabled him to come from behind, win the next two games, and take the title.   Schultz will receive $150 for 1st place.   Howell takes home $100 for 2nd place.   Shillington's 3rd place finish earned him $75.   4th place Jay Younger (Old Town 1) won $50 and will join Schultz, Howell, and Shillington in the upcoming All-Star Tournament.   The 46-player field was by far the largest ever for a Best-of-the-Rest Tournament.   The updated payouts and the tournament bracket are now posted.

NOTES FROM 7/19/10 BOARD MEETING   The new Board met at Break Time on Monday, July 19th.   The Summer budget and Summer payouts were approved.   The Board voted to have a double-elimination, race-to-one Best-of-the-Rest Tournament on Tuesday, Sept 7th.   The top 12 finishers receive cash, and the top 4 finishers qualify for the All-Star Tournament.   Players that have missed two or more weeks and would have made the All-Stars had they played every week will be handicapped in the winners bracket.   A new format for the All-Star tournament was also approved.   The top 20 players in each division automatically qualify.   First-round byes will be given to the the top 10 players in each division.   Day one (Sat Sept 11) will be double-elimination, and all but the final matches will be race-to-two.   The final matches in the winners and losers brackets will be race-to-three.   On the first day, the 44-player field will be whittled down to 16.   Those 16 players will return on Tuesday Sept 14 and play single-elimination, race-to-three, until we have a winner.   The top 16 finishers receive a cash payout.   The Board also approved a rule change for the Winter 2010/11 season.   If there is a foul or a scratch on the break, the incoming player no longer has to shoot from within the kitchen.   Now, all fouls, including fouls on the break, result in ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.   Also, if a shooter sinks the 8-ball on the break and fouls, the opponent can no longer have the original shooter re-break.   The opponent must either spot the 8-ball and take cue ball-in-hand, or re-break.

BCAPL ADDS NEW 'ADVANCED' PLAYER RANKING   In order "to allow more players to participate and to further competitive opportunity", the BCAPL has added a new level of play, the Advanced Division, that falls between the Open Division and the Master Division.   All players that were previously designated as a Team Master will now be in the Advanced Division.   Teams playing in the 2011 Open Tournament may have up to two (2) Advanced players.   Masters may no longer play in the Open Team tournament.   In 2011 there will be new Mens/Mixed and Women's Advanced Team Tournaments.   The Women's Masters Tournament has been eliminated.   There will continue to be Open and Masters Scotch Doubles tournaments.   In order to play in the Open Scotch Doubles tournament, both players must be in the Open Division.   Retroactive to 2005, any man finishing in the top eight (8) and any woman finishing in the top four (4) of the Open Singles Tournament will be designated as a Master.   9th - 48th place (men) and 5th - 16th place (women) will be placed in the Advanced Division.   The BCAPL will also add a new Advanced Singles Tournament for both men and women, but no word yet regarding the entry fee or the size of the race.

BCAPL TAKES THE KITCHEN OUT OF 8-BALL PLAY   Effective 6/1/10, the BCA Pool League has changed the rule regarding a foul on the break.   The incoming player no longer has to shoot from within the kitchen.   Now, all fouls, including fouls on the break, result in ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.   At their next meeting, the Board will vote whether or not to change to the new rule starting in the Winter season.
THE SANTA BARBARA POOL LEAGUE WILL NOT USE THIS NEW RULE DURING THE SUMMER SEASON.

ELECTION RESULTS ARE IN   The votes have been counted in the race for the five (5) at-large spots on the Board of Directors.   Incumbents Ed Ogden, Phil Beach, and Sami Severson were re-elected.   They will be joined by newcomers Mike Rys and Andy Reagan.   The first order of business for the new Board will be to approve the budget for the Summer 2010 season.   The next Board meeting will be held in a few weeks.   Here are the results of the vote...

VEGAS UPDATE - LEANA FINLEY WINS BIG!!   Despite being forced to play until after 3:00 am, Leana Finley kept her game in top form and finished in 7th place in the Women's Open Singles at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships.   Finley won her first three matches, then seven straight while in the loser's bracket.   Her last match Monday was scheduled at 10:30 pm, but didn't start until after 2:00 am.   Leana won $1,100 for her efforts, easily the largest amount ever won by a member of the Santa Barbara Pool League, and is now classified as a Master Player in the BCAPL.   In addition, Finley shared a $125 check for finishing in 65th place in Scotch Doubles.   Her partner was League President Chris Ackler.   Josh Gomes went deep into the winner's bracket in the Men's Open Singles tournament and won $475 dollars for his 49th place finish.   The only SBPL team to finish in the money was Don Q's 1.   After a heartbreaking opening round loss to a team from Portugal, Jim Holloway's team won three straight matches to finish in 193rd place and earn $250.   Click here to see the brackets for EVERYONE in the Santa Barbara Pool League.

CLIFF ROOM 2 DETHRONES MONTY'S 2   Top-seeded Cliff Room 2 escaped an upset bid by Sportsman 1, then dominated Break Time 4 to win the Winter 2009/10 League Championship.   Captain Jack Poet drained the decisive 8-ball against Break Time's Jim Green to clinch the title.   Earlier, Cliff Room 2 struggled against 4th seed Sportsman 1, but down 6-5, they were able to put together three straight wins to move onto the finals.   Break Time 4 led most of the way in their semifinal match against Monty's 2, but Monty's Ismael Huerta scored his third win of the match to force a hill-hill game between Break Time's Jake Speer and Monty's captain Alfonso Lazaro.   The final game was a 30-minute struggle.   Speer missed two great opportunities at the 8-ball, but never left Lazaro with an easy out.   Eventually, Speer was left with an easy side-pocket shot to put Break Time into the finals.   Monty's went on to manhandle Sportsman 8-3 in the consolation match.   Cliff Room 2 takes home $1,000 for 1st place.   Break Time 4 wins $500, Monty's 2 gets $250 for 3rd place, and Sportsman settles with $125.   Click here to view the playoff tournament bracket.

MARTIN HERNANDEZ - ALL-STAR TOURNAMENT CHAMPION   Martin Hernandez (Break Time 4) went through the winner's bracket unbeaten and was crowned champion of the Winter 2009/10 All-Star Tournament.   Hernandez defeated Ismael Huerta (Monty's 2) in the finals.   Jim Holloway finished in 3rd place.   Click here to view the complete results.   The tournament brackets for day one and day two are now available.

WHAT'S THE CALL?   You have ball-in-hand.   You place the cue ball very close to an object ball so that you can get the best angle on your next shot.   Several seconds later, as you are lining up the shot, the cue ball rolls on its own and touches the object ball.   Is this a foul?   Answer.

ANDY REAGAN WINS BEST-OF-THE-REST TOURNAMENT   Congratulations to Andy Reagan (Sportsman 2), the Winter 2010 Best-of-the-Rest Tournament champion!   Reagan defeated Sergio Garcia (Creekside 1) in the finals to win $150 and an automatic spot in the All-Star tournament.   Sergio had defeated his uncle, Peter Garcia (Cliff Room 4), in the winners bracket semi-finals, lost to Reagan in the hill-hill match, then beat his uncle again to make it to the finals.   Peter Garcia finished in 3rd place and Eddie Velez (Moose Lodge 2) finished in 4th place.   Shaun Snyder (Endless Summer) and Jeremy Warner (Brewco Lounge 1) finished tied for 5th place.   The top six finishers all qualified for the April 24/25 All-Star tournament.   31 players competed for almost $800 in prize money.   Here is the tournament bracket.

OXNARD 162 REPEATS AS SOUTH COAST 8-BALL CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS   Oxnard 162 dominated both days of competition and won the 3rd Annual South Coast 8-Ball Challenge.   The winner-take-all prize was $1,200.   This year's Challenge was held in the same location as last year; The Arena Bar in Simi Valley.   Five 10-person teams participated; Oxnard 162, Oxnard UPL, Torrance 241, and two teams from the Santa Barbara Pool League.   After Saturday's singles and doubles play, Oxnard 162 held a small lead over Torrance and SBPL-A.   Oxnard 162 extended that lead on Sunday with three straight team wins, but with the help of a hill-hill table run by Josh Gomes, SBPL-A defeated Oxnard 162 to tighten the gap.   The Challenge came down to the final match of the day between Oxnard 162 and Torrance 241.   Torrance entered the match 14 points behind and needed a win, but Oxnard 162 won 13 of the 15 games, including several break-and-runs, to clinch the victory.   Oxnard 162's captain, Manny Herrera, had three wins and two break-and-runs in that final match to edge teammate Tony Pak for the men's Most Valuable Player trophy.   The award was given to the player who scored the most points over the two-day competition.   Our own Leana Finley finished two points ahead of Oxnard 162's Aimee Super and won the female Most Valuable Player award.

JOE ROGAN DOES EARL STRICKLAND   This video is hilarious.   Comedian (and avid pool player) Joe Rogan interviews as Earl Strickland.   Taped last weekend at the Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament at Hollywood Billiards.

SUMMARY OF THE DEC 28 MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS   Click here to read the summary of the latest Board meeting.   Among the items discussed were the new league rulebook, the league budget, and policies regarding league fees, drug use, and sportsmanship.
IMPORTANT!!   All money that is owed to the league through the first 13 weeks of play MUST be paid back by January 26th, or else the player(s) responsible for the debt will be INELIGIBLE.   Players that do not pay league fees in the future will have three weeks from the date of non-payment to repay the debt or they will not be eligible to play.

CONCESSION OF MATCH VIDEO EXAMPLE   This is an excellent video example of what constitutes a concession of a match, and also why you should never concede.   From the 2006 World Pool Championship.   Note that Roy Apancho not only shakes Efren Reyes' hand, he makes a motion to unscrew his playing cue...either is sufficient to concede the match to Reyes.   One could argue that Reyes was fooling around when he missed the 9-ball, but you never know.

KEEP YOUR GAME SHARP AT LOCAL TOURNAMENTS   There are three local tournaments and several in Ventura and southward that you can play in.   On Monday nights, Break Time holds an $8-entry 8-ball tournament.   On the last Monday of each month, Break Time changes this to a $20-entry 9-ball tournament.   Bak Dor has a $5-entry 8-ball tournament on Thursday evenings (bar rules).   And Monty's has a $7-entry 8-ball tournament every Friday.   Monty's wants to start their Friday tourney closer to 7:00 pm...please arrive early. Click here for a list of all local tournaments.

MORE 8-BALL RULES QUIZ QUESTIONS   Five more questions have been added to the list.   Is your knowledge of the rules good enough to get them all right?   Take the quiz.

RULE CLARIFICATION: 8-BALL POCKETED ON THE BREAK.   You cannot win or lose a game on the break, no matter what happens to the 8-ball or the cue ball.
RULE 2.4 of the 2010/11 BCAPL Rules states...
  1. If you pocket the 8-ball on the break and do not foul, you may:
    • have the 8-ball spotted and accept the table in position or;
    • re-rack the balls and break again.
  2. If you pocket the 8-ball on the break and foul, your inning ends. Your opponent may:
    • have the 8-ball spotted and take ball in hand;
    • re-rack the balls and break;
  3. If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, and it is not noticed until after another shot has been taken, the game will be replayed with the player who broke the game breaking again.

CONCESSION OF MATCH.   RULE 1.44 of the 2010/11 BCAPL Rules states...
When your opponent is on the hill, if you make a motion to unscrew your playing cue during your opponent's inning you lose the match.
This rule has been in existence for hundreds of years.   In a one-game match (like we play), both players are on the hill at all times.   Why is unscrewing your cue a concession?   Because the only other reason for doing so would be to annoy your opponent, and that is highly unsportsmanlike.   Keep in mind that this rule only applies to your playing cue.   If you also have a break cue and/or a jump cue, you may unscrew them at any time with no penalty.   Also, if YOU are currently shooting, then you may unscrew your playing cue with no penalty.   Other forms of concession are saying "good game", "that's good", "it's yours", etc., offering a congratulatory handshake, putting your house cue back in the rack (if that is your playing cue), and deliberately whacking object balls with your hand or cue in frustration.   The BCAPL strongly encourages all players to complete every game on the table, and to use extra care in choosing their words and actions toward the end of a game.   If a dispute arises as to whether a concession has occurred, call a league official (Chris: 259-7814, Jeff: 452-3835).   Their judgment will be final.

30 YEARS AGO - CALIFORNIA ALL-STAR INVITATIONAL.   Click here to see 1979 brochure for the California All-Star Invitational 8-Ball Shootout, held at the Earl Warren Showgrounds.   This tournament was hosted by the Santa Barbara - Goleta Valley Pocket Billiards Association.   If you look at the roster of teams in the league back then you will notice a lot of familiar names.   Peltz, Lalo, Shillington, Silva, Gallager, Atkins, Peña, Bareno, and more.

RULE CLARIFICATION - USING CUE STICK TO ADJUST CUE BALL.   Here is the rule as written in the SBPL Rules & Regs:

When you have ball in hand, you may use your hand or any part of your cue, including the tip and the ferrule, to position the cue ball.   If you use your cue stick to place the cue ball, any action which would be a legal stroke will be considered a shot, and must meet the requirements of a legal shot or it is a foul.

The key words here are "any action which would be a legal stroke".   The definition of "legal stroke" is

LEGAL STROKE - Forward motion of the cue resulting in the cue tip striking the cue ball for only the momentary time customarily associated with a normal shot.

So if you are rolling the cue ball around with your cue on top of the cue ball and your cue starts to move forward, it is NOT A FOUL, because that action would not be considered a legal stroke.

RULE CLARIFICATION - CAN TEAMMATES CALL FOULS??. In our league, the answer is YES.   If you are playing in a BCA sanctioned team tournament (like in Las Vegas), the answer is NO.   Since we do not have official referees watching our games, we require that at least one teammate from each team act as a referee to watch the game to help resolve disputes.   Either the player or his or her teammate can call a foul, and this is not considered coaching.   The other team has the right to disagree, and if there is a disagreement, the two teams should refer to the rule book to resolve the dispute.   Every team packet should have a rule book inside.   Also, if you play in the Winter league, every player should have a copy of the BCAPL handbook.   If the dispute cannot be resolved, a league official should be immediately contacted to help resolve the matter.   Call the league president (Chris Ackler) at 259-7814, and if he does not answer call the bar where he (Sportsman 1) is playing.

CLARIFICATION OF THE SUBSTITUTE RULES.   Substitutes are an integral part of our league.   We all need them.   But controls have been put on the use of substitutes in order to promote league stability and limit the use of "hired guns".   If you sub for a bar, then you are allowed to sub for ANY team from that bar during the season, whether they play home or away.   In addition, you may also sub for a VISITING team if they are playing at YOUR bar.   As long as you continue to sub for the SAME TEAM, you will accrue points just like regular players.   If you play enough games and accrue enough points to win money and/or qualify for end-of-season tournaments, then that's wonderful.   However, every time you sub for a DIFFERENT team, your points and games will get zeroed out.   Why do we do this?
  • Promote team stability.   We want to reward players for being dedicated to a team throughout a season.   The team captain's job becomes difficult when having to continually find subs.
  • Limit the use of "hired guns".   If we didn't zero out points and games then a top player could theoretically sub for many different teams and acquire enough points to win big money and play in the All-Star or Best-of-the-Rest tournament.   This is not fair because the sub would not be playing the same list of opponents as the rest of the regular players.   And there is the possibility that the sub could play against teams from different divisions and against the same team multiple times.
Team captains are responsible for knowing whether or not their sub has played for a different bar during that season.   If you are the opposing team captain, you have the right to check the sub's name against the stats sheet to see if the sub has played for a different bar.   If the sub HAS played for a different bar, then you are allowed to ask the sub's captain to find a different sub.   OR...you may allow that sub to play.   That decision is up to the opposing team captain.   However, the opposing team captain must say something BEFORE the sub plays his or her games.   Any games played prior to notification are official.

Occasionally there are special circumstances that arise where the league will grant waivers to the various substitute rules.   The league considers these on a case-by-case basis.   Usually waivers will be granted to players from a team that has broken up or to players that will help a team from breaking up.

BEER FRAME POLICY.   This is a reminder for all of us, especially those that are new to the league.   All of our bars graciously offer us one free drink per league night.   This drink MUST be the same as a drink that you have previously purchased that evening.   Think of it as a one-time 2-for-1 deal.   If you have been drinking Bud bottles, you get one free bottle of Bud.   If you have been drinking shots of Patron, then you can get one free shot of Patron.   If the only thing you have been drinking is soda or water, then soda or water is all you may get for the beer frame drink.   Please DO NOT abuse this privilege.   The league has instructed the bars to inform us if people are asking for free drinks that they have not yet purchased.   Multiple violations of this policy is grounds for dismissal from the league.   Also, please do not forget to generously tip your Tuesday night bartender.

Whether you are a team captain or not, everyone should review the team captain responsibilities.

There has been a lot of confusion lately over the Frozen Ball Rule.   This rule comes up most often when a player is playing a safety with an object ball that is frozen to a rail.   Here is the rule as it is written in the OFFICIAL RULES OF THE BCA POOL LEAGUE:
1.20 Object Ball Frozen to Cushion
If the first object ball contacted by the cue ball is frozen to a cushion, then after the cue ball makes contact with the frozen object ball:
    a. any object ball must be pocketed, or;
    b. the cue ball must contact a cushion, or;
    c. the frozen ball must contact a cushion attached to a separate rail, or;
    d. another object ball must contact a cushion.
Any ball, including the cue ball, which is frozen to a cushion at the start of a shot and then is forced into a cushion attached to the same rail is not considered to have contacted that cushion unless it leaves the cushion, contacts another ball, and then contacts the cushion again. Look at line 1b.   This clearly states that if the cue ball first hits the frozen ball, then the cue ball hits ANY rail (including the rail to which the object ball is frozen), it is a legal shot.   If, after the cue ball hits the frozen ball, the cue ball or any ball other than the frozen ball DOES NOT hit a rail, then the shot is legal only if the frozen ball leaves the rail and contacts a different rail, OR, if the frozen ball leaves the rail, contacts another ball, then hits the same rail again.   IMPORTANT: Your object ball IS NOT FROZEN unless, prior to your shot, your opponent has inspected the ball and declared it frozen, AND YOU AGREE.   Click here to view some diagrams that help illustrate this rule.
